I got my first look at Outlook 12 Beta 1 last night and my first
experience was not good. I have used Outlook for many years stepping
through all the versions from 97 to present. It has evolved into an
awesome powerful email program. With Outlook 2003 I was totally
impressed. They implemented new features that provided for awesome
categorizing into what I was able to establish a message base that was
second to none. Now, I look at the new version 12 and was
flabbergasted, shocked, and totally pissed off that they moved to a
totally different direction and undid a major setup job that I had
established. I'm talking about the changes to the flags and
categories. What is Microsoft thinking here?
In Outlook 2003 I have a choice of 6 different flags. I could then
create unlimited categories. How impressive was that? Very...
Outlook being my file cabinet, the flags provided me with 6 drawers in
that file cabinet and the categories gave me an unlimited amount of
folders that I could place in each drawer. Using 2 examples, I created
one flag (blue) for projects and another flag (orange) for tech info.
As messages came in dealing with the vairous projects and tech info
that I work with, I assigned categories (Virus, Spyware, Windows, VPN,
etc etc) to each message. If it is tech info I flag it Orange and if
it deals with projects I flag it blue. Now I create a search folder to
search only Orange flags and name it Tech Info. I create a search
foder to search only Blue flags and call it Projects. I then go into
each search folder and Arrange by Categories. How sweet is that?
Very...
In Outlook 12, some imbecile decided that it would be better to GO
BACKWARDS to one single Red Flag and move all the other "colors" to
categories and eliminate the other category list that was in Outlook
2003. This effectively kills the ability to "sub-categorize" and
totally destroys the message base that I took years developing.
My only hope is that since this is a beta 1, someone will rethink this
and come to the same conlusion I have with only a cursory look.
Problem is, I am not an official beta tester and can not submit feed
back direct.
I do realize I can go back to folders and categories, but like the
subject line says, it is a step backwards. I do not understand why
Microsoft would introduce a new feature that is useful in one version
and take it away in the next version.
