Outlook 2000 and new .pst compatibility

I am in a mess. In moving house my laptop and associated discs/stuff etc was
severly damaged and only a few files from the hard disc were saved,
thankfully the Outlook .pst file.

I have an old Dell and found that Outlook 2002 SP1 was installed so tried
to get an update on it without success. (It wanted a disc from Outlook
Business, which I am sure I never had).

The problem is that the saved .pst from my Outlook XP file will not import
into this Outlook (it says it is incompatible and check with administrator)
Is there anything that can be done, short of buying all the next discs
again.....

What you claim is simply not possible. Any PST file created in any version
of Outlook prior to Outlook 2003 is perfectly compatible with all versions
of Outlook.
Provide the rest of your story and do so accurately. You have left out a
lot.
Moreover, importing is never the correct way to access any PST file.

Make sure that the read-only attribute is not set, then open (not
import) the file with Outlook (File | Open | Outlook Data File).

I assure you what I stated was inclusive and accurate.

1) This is the exact message I receive when I try to "import" into my old
version of Outlook. "The file C:\Documents and Settings\MICHAEL
SANDERS\Desktop\Outlook from Sony.pst is not compatible with this version of
the Personal Folders information service. Contact your administrator."

2) Could you please also tell me what the best way is to access the .pst
file from my Sony laptop which as you see above I have copied to my Dell
desktop and renamed so I can identify it..

Check properties of the sony.pst file, that the read only attribute is not
set.
Then within Outlook, File>Open>Personal Folders
Do NOT import.

If however outlook on your dead Laptop was version 2003 or higher then its
true the files are incompatible with the earlier version Outlook on your
Dell.

The only other problem that can occur is with the process used to copy the
old data file to the new PC

The error message you get only occurs if you are trying to open a PST file
created in Outlook 2003 or 2007 in an earlier version. You said you were
doing the opposite.
You access PST files this way:
File > Open > Outlook Data File...

Then you created that PST with Outlook 2003, not Outlook 2002.
