Hi,
I am using W2K ja Outlook 2000.
I´ve been very satisfied with Microsoft Outlook! I have over 1000
contact in my personal contacts folder which is actually located on
server. I am using HP XE3 laptop and once a month I update all contact
offiline (at home... ;-) ) and when I come go back to office Outlook
syncronizes everything to server. And in offline mode I syncronize
contact information to PDA.
Works very well. Everything is saved on server but I have all contact
information with me all the time. I have even given rights to my
colleagues to read my contacts and even to update them. When I do sync
next time to PDA I also get those updated information done by my
colleagues.
But I have had all these years some annoying problems.
CASE AND PROBLEM 1. (I have solved).
"Export and import data between Outlook and Excel."
I would like to edit some contact information in Excel because sometimes
it is quicker there. For example if company address changes I can change
that for all persons working in that company.
I have found the way to export contact information to xls. file, edit
that and import back to Outlook. BUT YOU MAY NOT TOUCH FIRST AND LAST
LINE in Excel. I don´t know why but I have found that some kind of
footer and header for that file stays there. If I edit that I can´t
import contact back to Outlook (without errors).
Does somebody knows about that and is there any documentation? I can
live with this but would like to know more.
CASE AND PROBLEM 2.
"Handling contacts as vcf files doesn´t work well.!
I can open, edit and close contact information when I edit contacts IN
Outlook contacts folder. BUT if I have saved some contact in separate
vcf file and try to edit it problems begin.
Let´s have a simple example. I have made my own vcf on desktop. Then I
decide to edit it a little bit. I edit and try to save it and VERY
OFTEN Outlook craches.
a) Outlook crashes if
* edit .vcf file and try to save it.
* if I drag and drop many different .vcf files from desktop to Outlook
contact folder
Solution:
I edit contact in Outlook contacts folder and when it is ready I export
it to vcf.
Or I DON´T drag and drop .vcf files even if I feel they should be "drag
and drop"´d to "contact warehouse" in Outlook.
WHY Outlook can´t manage .vcf files better even if it makes user to
think that .vcf is as easy to edit (and save) that .xls or .doc file???
b) Outlook won´t save .vcf if I have edited "note" field. I can write
almost a novel into note field but only again when it is inside contacs
folder. When I try to edit separate .vcf file it don´t work.
Solution: I edit contact in Outlook contacts folder and when it is ready
I export it to vcf.
WHY Outlook can´t manage .vcf files better even if it makes user to
think that .vcf is as easy to edit (and save) that .xls or .doc file???
CASE AND PROBLEM 3. (maybe off topic and belongs to Nokia but I got
there only answer: "Use latest, updated versions of PC Suite. I got this
response in 7 weeks)
"To make sync to PDA easily and fast."
It was very easy and quick to make sync between Outlook and Casio PDA
(Enterprise harmony software handled that). Sync took sometimes just
some seconds.
When I am using Nokia Communicator 9210, Outlook 2000, PC Suite 1.20
(latest version available in finnish), Windows 2000 many many problems
begins.
* syncronizing 1000 contact takes about an hour even if I have edited
one single email address
* double contacts appear in Outlook
Solution:
I delete all contacts in 9210. I sync Communicator and Outlook by
downloading all contacts to empty phone. It takes an hour. And I make it
once a month.
I am partially satisfied but still I´d like to find answers.
