Outlook 2000 crash

My Outlook 2000 opens, but then won't respond and won't receive new mail from
server. I have to end the program thru Windows Task Manager. Can I upgrade to
2003 and retain address book, existing emails, etc? Also, how much room must
be available on C drive to upgrade?

What type of mail account do you have? Have you tried running a detect and
repair from the Help menu? If you use a PST, have you scanned it for errors?

Also, what size is your PST file if you're using one? Outlook 2000 has a
size limit on it of 2 GB.

Just so you know, there is no upgrade. You must uninstall Office 2000 and
install the newer version of Office, but you must first determine if your PST
is the issue or not. If the PST is at fault for the problems you're seeing,
they will simply follow you if you upgrade.

Thanks for the reply, however I don't know how to do the things you're asking
of me. I did find the location of the .pst files. There are "archive",
"backup", and "outlook". The "outlook" pst is 1.99 gb. Both the others are
much smaller. Since I can't use any functionality of the Outlook program (it
simply opens & crashes), how do I run a "detect & repair" or scan the file
for errors? Thanks for your help.

I see the issue. Your PST file is too large. The maximum size that your PST
can grow to is 2 GB and you're barely under that.

To learn a bit about your PST, read here:

http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/aboutpst.htm

With your PST being that large, you'll have to compact it but first you'll
need to run the inbox repair tool. The instructions are located in the above
link.

To compact your PST: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/196890

Make sure you empty your deleted items regularly as they contribute to your
personal folder size.

I hope this helps!

Hello again. I followed your advice and ran a scan on my outlook.pst file.
I then tried to open Outlook 2000 to compact the pst file. However, once
opened the program stops responding immediately. I can't follow any of the
instructions to compact the pst. I have Outlook 2003 on another computer
which is networked to the computer with Outlook 2000 on it. Can I import the
2000 pst into the 2003 program? If so, how? Thanks for your help.

Kathleen, I read the info from the link you sent. Which program or software
do you suggest I use? How reliable is this "fix"? Thanks.
