Outlook 2000 flashes before my eyes!

When I open Microsoft Outlook, I see the in-mail for a
split second and then it closes. When I open Word, it
opens to a blank document but as soon as I try to open an
exisiting document, it does the same thing. What do I need
to do?

Try running Detect and Repair -- you can run it from the Help menu of any
installed Office product (try Excel if you can't get into either Word or
Outlook) or run it from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Microsoft
Office. Make sure you have your Office CD handy.

Ah, this old chestnut, it's been a while...The main reason for this is
outlined below (and no, Jocelyn, a D&R won't fix it, as /all/ Office
applications are affected! ;o))

The first reason has to do with the installation key. About six months after
the launch of 2000, MS realised that there was a large number of pirated
copies circulating with keys beginning 'GC6J3'. When they released SP1 they
coded it so that any licence key (legitimate or not) that began with those
five characters was disabled and Office was prevented from running.

See the following KB article for more information

Office Applications Immediately Quit after SP1/SP1a is Applied

The above is also true if you have Project 2000 installed as a standalone
application (i.e. installed after Office).
