Outlook 2000 hangs; office 2003 in computer but not activated

I have a new HP a1350n computer, which came with a 60 day trial of Office
2003. I loaded and planned to use my copy of Office 2000 professional and
wait on the 2003 trial until the next version of Office comes out late this
or sometime next year. (I use Access, which didn't come on the trial
version). When I start up Outlook 2000 after starting the computer, it works
fine, but if I close it out and try to use it a bit later, the program hangs
during startup. The problem is consistent.

I would have removed the trial Outlook first. With Outlook closed, try
deleting the file outcmd.dat in the (hidden) folder
%AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook.

Sorry- forgot to say that Office 2003 trial has not been activated.

Trial versions don't activate, or at least the ones I've tried don't. I
just wouldn't trust two different versions of Outlook installed on the same
machine. In fact, it's usually not possible, but I think that's different
with the trial version.
I thought that it would give me 60 days from the date of activation,
but perhaps it is 60 days from the start of use of the computer.
I'd like to keep the 2003 trial for later use, and my understanding
is that if I remove Outlook 2003, this wouldn't be possible.

Just download the trial installation later when you're ready to try it (or
download it now and save it) or reload it from the installation CD that
should have come with your PC.
