Outlook 2000 installed on a Vista pc shuts down soon after startin

I have installed Office 2000 on my new Vista laptop. Word and excel appear to
be working but I can't keep Outlook up. I have installed it basically to read
old emails from my old XP system. When I first installed it Iwas able to
keep it up long enough to import the .pst file. Outlook starts and almost
immediately shuts down. Or if it stays up if I select an email outlook shuts
down.

Outlook 2000 is not fully compatible with Vista, I believe you have to
configure it in workgroup mode

Assuming you dont have or are not going to get Office 2003 or 2007, if the
old PC is available, export your mail to Outlook Express, then copy your msg
store to the Vista PC and make it available to Windows Mail

What is being logged to the Event Viewer regarding this?

While you can install Outlook 2000 on Windows Vista, it is not recommended
as Outlook 2000 is not fully compatible with Windows Vista and no longer
supported either. There are some issues you'll encounter which you can work
around and others you cannot.

Depending on your needs, consider using Outlook 2003 SP2 or higher instead
or switch to Windows Live Mail. If you still insist on using Outlook 2000,
make sure you install it in Corporate/Workgroup mode to work around most of
the issues.

Also, note that you shouldn't use Import to access an exisitng pst-file. Use
File-> Open-> Personal Data File... instead.
