I accept the invitation, and the appointments populate
where you see the count. The calendar items are blank. any
clues.

You may want to check to see if your
client has the "Private" sensitivity setting set.

Tools | Options | Email Options | Advanced Email Options...

If this has been set then anything created with it on will only
show to the actual owner in their own profile.

To remove the setting you would need to:
Open the contact
Uncheck the "Private" box on the bottom right-hand
corner of the contact.

Also, the following is a quote from
Diane Poremsky [MVP - Outlook] on this same subject
if you have the small business contact manager installed:

you'll probably also want to fix the private setting - did you (or do you)
have the small business contact manager installed? it will cause the private
flag to be set. see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=241846
