Outlook 2000 / Office 97

I've just been given a PC which is running Outlook 2000
and office 97. When I open an email with an office 97
attachment and open the attachment I get the message

C:\...\OLK2\XXXXXXX.doc is being used by <me>. Do you
want to make a copy?

On investigation it appears that this is due to the
document/spreadsheet etc being opened twice when I double
click it ?.

I cant find any reference to this behaviour in the
support documentation so I'm looking for advice here.
