Outlook 2000 POP3 Configuration

I have a customer that has been setup with Exchange 5.5 POP3 server.
The users are running Outlook 2000 SP3. User "A" has his Outlook
configured to leave a copy of message on server. His secretary, user
"B", has her own mailbox and is configured to access user A's mailbox
as well. The problem I'm having is when user A checks his messages and
reads/responds to them, they are marked as read, but when user B
accesses user A's mailbox to check messages, they are all marked as
unread.

Is there a configuration in Outlook that will allow user B to know
what messages user A has already read/responded to? Or is this a
limitation of POP3/Outlook. If so, are there any add-on programs I
could use for this purpose.

Thanks for any help!!

Why are you using POP3 with Exchange? It is optimized for the type of
scenario you are looking at.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal

This is coming from their IT department. They opted to use POP3 for
several reasons. One being the exchange server is hosted offsite and
they have no direct link or vpn solution (Cost - This is a non-profit
Org.). The other reason is the users travel a great deal and they need
to be able to access mail. Another reason is they claim that the
mobile devices they use are not IMAP compatable.
