Outlook 2000 problems

Outlook 2000 SP4, part of Office SB
Windows 2000 Pro SP4, workgroup, no email server

I was having problems burning CDs, so I reformatted my HDD. Before
re-formatting & re-installing, I copied all of my files / folders / programs
to DVDs.

After installing Office 2000 & obtaining all of the updates, I copied
outlook.pst file from the DVD to C:\docs & set\user\local set\app
data\microsoft\outlook.

Now, in my folders bar, I have "personal folders" and "outlook today".
"personal folders" contains my folders, calendar, tasks, etc. All of my new
messages are going to "inbox" of "outlook today".

1. How do I get rid of the the "personal folders"? I'm open to alternative
plans.

2. I copied the messages & folders from "personal folders\inbox" to "outlook
today\inbox". Now the messages open in "preview pane" mode, even though I
have turned off preview pane for "inbox". It wasn't like this before I
re-formatted.

3. Before I re-formatted, an envelope would appear in my system tray,
notifying me of the arrival of a new message. How do I restore that option?

I have read help > microsoft outlook help" regarding the above problems, &
searched the internet, but I have been unable to find the answers. Clearly,
my search string does not include the correct terms.

Thanks for your help.

If you've already copied all your data to the default .PST file (Outlook
Today), you can just close the Personal Folders file -- right click its root
folder in the Folder List and select Close.

Are you sure you turned off the preview pane for whatever view you are using
on the Inbox folder of the Outlook Today set of folders? Double-check...

Do you want the Outlook Today folders to be your delivery location or do you
want to reuse "Personal Folders" as your delivery location (which will make
it become "Outlook Today")? If the latter (since you say "Personal Folders"
contains all your calendar, tasks, folders, etc.), select "Personal
Folders", then click File>Folder>Properties and select "Deliver POP mail to
this personal folders file". Click OK. Stop and restart Outlook.

Dear Brian:
Thanks for your reply. Please forgive the amount of time it has taken for
me to respond.

I want "outlook today" to be my default location. On my folder list, I have
"personal folders" with a "+" to the left. clicking on the "+" reveals my
old calendar, old inbox, old sent items, etc. Also on my folder list, I have
"outlook today [ personal folders ]".

I would like to get rid of "personal folders" and use only "outlook today [
personal folders ]

Sincerely,
WC

It already is. That's what tells you the Personal Folders file is your
delivery location. Whatever PST that you make the delivery location will be
labeled "Outlook Today" in the folder list. As I said, if you were to make
the other PST your delivery location, the name on that one would change to
"Outlook Today".

Dear Brian:
I'm not trying to be difficult.

In my Outlook 2000 "folder list" bar, I have
+ Personal Folders

and I have
+ Outlook Today - [Personal Folders ]

Presently, I have transferred all of my messages from "+ Personal Folders "
to
"+ Outlook Today - [Personal Folders ]"

New messages go to the inbox associated with "+ Outlook Today - [Personal
Folders ]".

Is possible to delete " + Personal Folders "? If so, how do I do it? If it
is possible what problems,if any, are likely to occur?

Thanks for your help.

My goal:
Open Outlook 2000. In the "folder list" I want to see only one instance of
"Personal Folders".
When I click on a folder, such as "inbox", or subfolder within "inbox", I do
not want the "preview pane" feature enabled.

Thanks for your attention to my problems.

Didn't we already solve the preview pane problem in another thread?

Brian has given you the solution for closing any Personal Folders files that
you don't want showing in Outlook.

I thought the /nopreview is a "work around".

Yes, I can close them. How do I get rid of them? I have 2 instances of
"personal folders". I only want one.

I guess we're talking about two different things here. If you close a set of
Personal Folders out of Outlook, where are you still seeing it? If you just
see it on your hard drive, can't you just delete the .pst file?

As for /nopreview, it's not really a workaround since it does solve your
problem as long as you always use that switch on your Outlook shortcut. The
only other way to disable the preview pane on EVERYTHING, that I know of, is
to go into Define Views for every view that has the PP showing, and disable
it. Could be very time-consuming.

Closing them DOES get rid of them. It removes them from the profile and
Outlook will no longer show them. If that's not what you see then you
didn't follow my instructions.

At this point, I am very frustrated. I am willing to re-format my HDD,
re-install Windows 2000 Pro SP4, Outlook 2000, etc.

I need to save all of my messages / folders. Before I re-format, I intend
my .pst files to disk. If this is not recommended, please advise me.

After I re-format, re-install Win 2000, Office, et al, what should I do to
get Outlook to point to my old messages / folders?

Where should I put the .pst file? Currently, it is in C:\documents and
settings\username\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook.

I have 2 .pst files, mailbox.pst & outlook.pst. Mailbox.pst is > twice the
size of outlook.pst.

How do I avoid the problems I've had: 1. 2 instances of "personal folders"
in the Outlook "folder bar" and the "preview pane" being present in every sub
folder?

Thanks for your help.

Sorry to leave you hanging for so long -- I've been out of town and busy with
work. If you're still around, here are my recommendations:

1) Yes, by all means save your Outlook data to disk. Two pages that can
help you a lot with figuring out what to back up are
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm and
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm. Make sure Outlook
is closed before you copy or move any of its files.

2) The above articles should help you to restore most of your data files;
most will need to replace the new files that your new Outlook installation
creates, but the .PST files can be stored anywhere and it's a good idea to
put them in an easy-to-find location. Whatever you do, don't overwrite the
..PST file that Outlook creates when you reinstall it with your old .PST file
-- that's a sure-fire way to create those duplicate "ghost" .PST files in
your folder list. Once you have put the .PST files where you want them and
make sure they're not marked read-only, open Outlook and then use File | Open
| Personal Folders File to open each of them in Outlook. You can make one of
them your default set of Personal Folders by going into its properties
(right-click its root folder and click Properties) and checking the box for
"Deliver POP mail to this set of personal folders". Any .PST file you are
NOT using can be closed out of Outlook by right-clicking its root folder and
selecting Close. The file will disappear from Outlook but will remain on
your hard drive.

3) As we have discussed before, the only way I know of to turn off the
preview pane for all folders at once is to start Outlook with the /nopreview
switch. Otherwise you have to go into each defined view for each folder and
disable it there for that view only, which is a big waste of time IMHO.
