Outlook 2000 reinstall and updates

I have recently had to reinstall my office 2000 on my windows xp operating
system. I need to re install all past service packs.

My question is can I apply the service packs before setting up and
configuring outlook 2000, or if I should set up and configure Outlook 2000
before applying the up dates and service packs?

I would set a system restore point and then do the upgrades, service packs
etc before opening Office!

So the answer is apply patches before configuring software for use, correct?

That's the way I would do it others may have a different opinion
