Outlook 2000 - replying to HTML mssg, some of my reply text is unreadable when composing

Hello all:

I have a PC running WinXP, IE7 and Outlook 2000, that is current with
Windows Updates. Sometime in the past couple of weeks a strange problem
occurred:

in Outlook 2000, when replying to HTML messages some of the reply text I
type is unreadable in the message compose window, even though when the
message is sent the recipient does in fact have all the text I typed and it
is all readable. Replying to plain text messages is fine, as is composing a
new message as I have plain text set. Problem occurs only when replying to
messages that were sent to me as HTML, so of course Outlook replies to them
as HTML. The unreadable portions of my typed reply text remain unreadable
even if I choose "plain text" from the Format menu in the reply/compose
window.

Has anyone heard of this issue?

One other thing, possibly related or not, that also occurred recently: in
IE7, on some web pages, some text is unreadable. I can't figure out why.
It's not specially formatted text, and often the unreadable text is just a
few words within a sentence when the reast of the sentence and paragraph are
readable. If I highlight the text a few times, sometimes I can get part of
it to display temporarily. It appears to be an issue with IE7 and not with
the particular web pages, because those web pages are entirely readable in
an alternative browser such as Opera.

Could it be an issue introduced by some recent Windows Update?

Any ideas on what might fix this?
