outlook 2000 vs Outlook 2002 (xp)

A user from a different branch tried to connect to his Exchange 5.5 server
over the wan (over a 256k link) and he kept on getting connection timed out
(using Outlook 2000). I could ping the server and do a check name but it
would not let me open his mailbox. It kept on giving me "the exchange server
is unavailable" message. After pulling out my hair I installed Outlook XP
just to see what happens and it worked first time. Please, has anybody got
any explaination for this?

Well improvements have been made over the years. You'll get even better
results with Outlook 2003 configured with Cached Exchange Mode. For best
results on this (slow) connection upgrade to Exchange 2003 as well. ;-)
