Outlook 2000 will send but not receive

I have a computer with Windows XP professional running at
work. I installed Outlook 2000 and set up my MSN e-mail
account precisely as the technical bulletins said I
should. Now, I can send e-mails from OL2000 but when it
tries to receive, I log in, it tells me how many e-mails
I have, then while it is downloading the first message I
get an error report. Sometimes I report it to Microsoft,
sometimes I don't. Regardless, after this OL2000 shuts
down. I am connected to the internet via a LAN to DSL.
What am I doing wrong?
