Outlook 2001 freezes when opening personal folders

I'm using Outlook 2001 with OS 9.2. Every so often I won't be able to
access my personal folders and the program will freeze. If I
disconnect my personal folders and then reconnect them, it's okay.
What would cause this to happen? It's a real hassle.

Are they by any chance on a network server?

Yes. It's a Windows NT4 network and the mail server is
Exchange 5.5.

I meant: do you have your PST file saved on a network server, rather
than y our hard drive?
