My company just switched to Exchange/Outlook. I have had no problems
running Outlook in Classic mode while attached to the company network
over Ethernet. I am trying to persuade the IT people to enable IMAP
on the Exchange server so that I can use Entourage (I am the only Mac
user in an organization of more than 20,000 people!), but for now I'm
stuck with Classic and Outlook.
What I can't do yet is connect to Outlook through the company VPN. I
got the IP addresses for the SMTP and LDAP servers from IT and can
ping them just fine using the Network Utility in OS 10.3. But when I
launch Outlook and try to connect to server through the VPN I get a
long wait then a message that the server is unavailable. Under our
previous e-mail system (Novell GroupWise), I could run the mail client
through the VPN perfectly. In that client the network address was
entered directly (in an X.X.X.X format) rather than by name.
I've read through the last six months of posts here and learned a
great deal. I haven't found any that appear to deal directly with
this problem. Does anybody have any ideas why a system that works
perfectly in the office might be failing through a VPN connection that
is up and open?
Many thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.
