Outlook 2002 and XP SP2

I am running Office XP on Windows XP Professional using ICS to share dial up
56k modem.

I noticed in the firewall settings that POP3 (which I use for ISP email) is
not checked as an exception. I did run the Network setup wizard.

Do I manually need to check this to allow Outlook to work properly with my
ISP? Also, in the dialup connection settings there are no exceptions
checked. Only on the LAN connection. Why is this?

No need to check that box. Heads up, if you are running any type of
antivirus software that checks mail as it is downloaded, you might have
problems checking mail. If you do, try disabling the feature of scanning
e-mail.

No exceptions are checked for Dialup because it is assumed that the user
would always be connecting to a foreign network and wouldn't want any
programs on the local machine accepting connections. (Remember this is
software on you machine waiting for something to connect to it. No need to
set exception is you want to browse the internet with your favorite browser,
check mail, .etc). Exception is set on LAN connection because MS made an
assumption that the only thing that might be helpful to its customers is the
Remote Assitance feature. This program can accept connections only after
you invite someone to help you. Other programs (microsoft's instant
messenger) may register and unregister itself on the fly.)

No....see below.

Why is this?

The XP firewall controls only inbound access - your POP connection
originates from your computer(s) *to* the Internet, and should not be
blocked. Are you having any problems connecting, or are you just curious?

Outlook does not auto dial if I start it up. If I start Outlook after
connecting to the Internet then I have no trouble sending or receiving.
Mostly just curious as to why settings were that way. Thanks!

Did you set your Outlook account to dial?
Personally, even back when I used dialup, I preferred to launch the
connection manually anyway, but that's just me.
