Outlook 2002 - cannot empty deleted items folder

The Outlook on my computer at work will not delete anything from the deleted
items folder - it pops up a message saying: "the messaging interface has
returned an unknown error. If the problem persists restart Outlook". When I
restart it does the same thing. The problem started before I began the job,
so I don't know what caused the problem. Any ideas???

Incoming is POP3 & Outgoing is SMTP. Is that what you're looking for? I
don't know much about these things.
