I have a user with Outlook 2002 on Win XP Pro whose Recycler seems to
be corrupt. He can't delete messages in the normal fashion - he gets
"Errors have been detected in the file C:\Documents and
Settings\avstar\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit all mail-enabled
applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool."
Attempting to permanently remove items from the Deleted Items folder
returns a "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If
the problem persists, restart Outlook." message.
Deleting a message from the Inbox with shift-Delete works. Messages
cannot be moved to another folder, same error. Messages *can* be read
or sent.
I have run the Inbox Repair Tool. It finds only minor errors and
claims to have corrected them. I have compacted the mailbox (Tools,
Options, Mail Setup, Data Files, Personal Folders, Settings, Compact
Now) with no errors.
After Googling for suggestions I have attempted to delete all files
from C:\Recycler and then, to delete the Recycler folder itself.
After running "attrib -r -h -s *.*" in that folder and then deleting
everything, I find the folder empty - attempting to change the
attributes again returns a "no files found" error. But if I attempt
to delete the Recycler folder itself, it claims it isn't empty and
can't be deleted.
The only fixes I've seen in the Knowledge Base or here on Google have
been what I've already tried - or suggestions to delete files (like
..cdx or frmscache.dll) that don't exist on this system.
Ideas? (or is this user just not going to be able to use his recycle
bin anymore?)
