Outlook 2002 Can't send email for att.net address

I have a worldnet.att.net email address that has been working successfully
for years. We recently changed to DSL service, which is working great except
that we had to change the email account settings in outlook. AT&T gave us
the following settings:

POP3 Mail server: ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net
POP3 Server Port: 995 (with secure SSL connections enabled)
SMTP Mail server: imailhost.worldnet.att.net
SMTP Server Port: 465 (with secure SSL connections enabled)

I have changed to these settings, and everything works properly except
SENDING emails. When using the "Test Account Settings" feature, the
following tasks show:

Establish network connection - Completed
Find Outgoing mail server (SMTP) - Completed
Find incoming mail server (POP3) - Completed
Log onto incoming mail server (POP3) - Completed
Send test e-mail message - FAILED

When I compose an email and send it, I get this error message:

"Task 'ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net - Sending and Receiving' reported error
(0x8004210B): 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the
sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your
server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I have confirmed all the above settings with AT&T, but nothing works. How
can I get Outlook 2002 to send emails for this att.net email account?

See if setting your SMTP server to use authentication helps.
Additionally, if you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook,
disable this integration and try again.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried changing the authentication setting, but
it doesn't make any difference.

It is currently set to "requires authentication" with the option "use same
settings as my incoming mail server", but I have tried the other two options
as well ("log on using...username/password" and "log on to incoming mail
server before sending mail") AND I have tried unchecking "requires
authentication" altogether. Nothing seems to change anything.

I had read in some other posts about the possible connection with anti-virus
software, so I had already completely uninstalled my entire suite of
anti-virus and firewall software. I have rebooted several times and I have
deleted and re-added the email account setup both before and after the
uninstallation.

FWIW, I have another POP3 email account (yahoo.com email address) set up
that works just fine. The *ONLY* difference in the setup between the two is
the names of the servers (obviously) and the SSL ports for SMTP. The one
that works is set to port 587 and does not require a secure connection. The
att.net email account is set to port 465 and does require a secure connection
(per AT&T customer service), but I have have tried many different
combinations for this setting (25, 465, 587 - all with and without secure
connection).

Absolutely *NOTHING* seems to work! I have even tried other computers in
other locations (such as at home, where my ISP is not AT&T). There has to be
people with att.net email addreses using Outlook 2002 out there somewhere!
What am I doing wrong?

Problem solved --- FINALLY!

I found an obscure statement on another website somewhere that said “Outlook
XP SSL support will work for incoming email, but it won’t work for outgoing
email unless you get a patch from Microsoft or have a release that includes
the patch.â€

I checked my version of Outlook (Help --> About) and it *SAID* SP3 and I
checked the Microsoft website to find that SP3 was the latest release
available for Office XP. However, I noticed that there was an update that
addressed POP3/SMTP issues specifically. Even though I was showing SP3
installed, and the update stated that it was included in SP3, I decided to
download the SP3 release and re-install it, and...

....now it works!

I changed nothing else since the last time I posted, so I have to assume
that I somehow had a corrupted version of SP3 or something.

Bottom line - you must have that update installed or SP3 installed to use an
SMTP server that requires secure SSL connections enabled.
