Outlook 2002 deletes or moves answered messages

Ken Winter

My Outlook 2002 has suddenly started doing violence to original messages as
soon as I reply to them: It either permanently deletes them or moves them
into my "Sent Items" folder, depending on whether "Options / Preferences /
E-Mail Options / Save copies of messages in sent items folder" is unchecked
or checked.

I don't know of anything I did to make it start doing this, and I certainly
didn't intend it.

Anybody know how to fix it?

- Thanks, Ken Winter

No, I don't think so. I have a lot of rules, but I just checked and all of
them are "Apply this rule after the message arrives" rules - none are
triggered by my sending a message.

I was thinking a filter
Perhaps it's showing only unread msgs? So as soon as you read something -
it's gone from view yet still in the folder.
You can confirm this by checking the total number of items show in the lower
left with what you see ALSO the word filter will appear in the upper right
corner.

Reading a message doesn't make it disappear from my Inbox; it's *replying* to
a message that makes it disappear.

I'm not much familiar with filters. Is a filter what gets activated when I
do "Look for:"? If so, there's no filter active.

OHhhhhh
OK then first yes in Tools > Options > E-mail Options... > "Save copies of
messages in Sent Items Folder" should be check AND also then click on
"Advanced E-mail Options..." and make sure "In folders other than the INbox,
save replies with original message" is NOT check and that below it "Save
forwarded messages" IS checked.

Let us know

I set all the settings as you suggested. (The only one i had to change was
to un-check "In folders other than the Inbox, save replies with original
message".)

Alas, after I reply to a message, the message still disappears (into the
"Sent Items" folder).

As I mentioned earlier, all of my rules that appear in my "Rules Wizard" -
i.e. all the ones I wrote - are triggered by incoming messages, not by
outgoing ones. And in fact as I look at my Wizard, I don't see how one could
even write a rule that does this.

Could there be any rules that don't appear in the "Rules Wizard"?

Right-click the column headers in your Inbox and click Customize Current
View. See if the text next to the Filter button indicates a filter is set --
if so, click Filter to see what it is.

It says "Filters... Off", and nothing else on the "View Summary" box looks
like it would be relevant to the current problem. FWIW, in my many years as
an Outlook user, as far as I camn recall, this is the first time I've ever
brought up this dialog box.

OK...are you using a .PST file? If so, try running the Inbox Repair Tool
against it to see if it finds any errors. Search your drive for a file
called scanpst.exe and run it. Allow the program to make a backup of your
file before it makes any changes.

I'm happy, a little embarrassed, and quite baffled to report that the problem
has vanished. I was about to follow your advice on runing scanpst.exe when I
noticed that my Outlook is no longer mishandling answered messages - it now
just leaves them in the Inbox, as it should.

The baffled and slightly embarrassed part is because I haven't knowingly
done anything that could be credited with fixing it. So I have no idea what
caused the problem, and I have no idea what made it stop.

But I will keep everyone's suggestions on hand in case the problem ever
retrurns, and if it does I'll post the news to this forum.

Thanks to all for your help!
