Outlook 2002 hangs when opening

After years of faithful service, Outlook 2002 (Sp3) now hangs when I try to
open it. Possibly not a coincidence, I installed KB921594 security update
yesterday.

What happens is, the splash screen with license info displays, then my
calendar appears behind it, looking fine and accurate. The other elements -
folder list, toolbars, task list, do not appear. But the splash screen never
goes away. I can force Outlook to close using task manager; task manager
always informs me "the system cannot end this program because it is waiting
for a response from you". I cannot figure out what it might mean by that.
No place to make any response.
I am running XP Home Sp2, Outlook 2002 SP2.

Outlook will run fine in Safe mode. I tried the repair option; did not
help. I uninstalled the hotfix. Did not help.

Any ideas, anyone?

Try deleting the file %AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat before starting
Outlook.
