Outlook 2002 locks up

Paul Kraemer

Hi,

I am in charge of computer support at a small office. One of my users has
been experiencing a problem where Outlook 2002 (SP3) locks up at least once a
day. I can't pinpoint exactly when/why it locks up, but it more often than
not, it seems to happen after Outlook has been open for a few hours and
usually after clicking "Send/Receive". The only way he seems to be able to
recover from these lockups is to restart his PC.

This problem just started happening a few weeks ago. No changes were
(intentionally) made to his Windows or Outlook configuration prior to the
onset of this problem. I have one other user with almost an identical setup
who is *not* having the same problem. Both users have almost the same model
notebook PC (one has a Dell Inspiron 8500, the other has a Dell Inspiron
8600). Both are running Windows XP Pro. Both users really only use two
applications - Outlook 2002 and AutoCAD 2000i.

I realize that these applications (especially AutoCAD) are out of date, but
I can't see why we would have problems on one PC and not the other. The only
thing I can say is that the user who is having trouble makes use of Outlook
reminders for his tasks, where the other user does not.

I have run the scanpst.exe program on the .pst file of the user with the
problem, and it did not report any problems. I am thinking about trying the
following:

1. Delete Outlook profile for the problem user and create a new one,
attaching it to the same .pst file

2. If #1 does not work, reformat hard drive, reinstall windows XP and all
applications.

3. Upgrade to newer versions of AutoCAD and/or Outlook. I hesitate to do
this mostly due to AutoCAD. The upgrade is somewhat expensive and would
probably force me to add memory if not replace his computer with a newer
model. Besides, the older version of AutoCAD has all the features he
currently needs.

If anyone can give me any other things I can try, I would really appreciate
it.

thanks in advance,
Paul

What does your Application Event Viewer tell you? Are there Outlook or
Office-related errors detailed?

Try running a Detect and Repair from the Help menu.

Hi Kathleen,

I tried running a Detect and Repair from the Help menu. I checked "Restore
my shortcuts while repairing" but I did not check "Discard my customized
settings and restore default settings." It asked for my Office XP cd, I put
it in, and after a while I got a message saying "MS Office XP installation
completed successfully." Is this what it is supposed to do? Should I have
seen some sort of indication of whether the detect and repair was successful?

Also, below are two warnings and one error that seem to reoccur in the
Application Event viewer. I can't say for sure if any of them occur exactly
when Outlook locks up, but I will pay attention to this over the next few
days. I will also search to see if I can find away to elminate these
warnings and error. If you have any ideas, please let me know. If not, I
will post again if I find anything out - thanks again!

A good course of action is to delete and recreate the Outlook profile. I
would even reboot the PC/laptop inbetween the delete and the recreate.

Are the privileges set properly in WMI Management? Open the wmimgmt console
and veriffy.

Regarding error 1517, try running UPHClean to see what turns up.

I can't find anything on your final error so far after a Google search. Try
recreating the Outlook profile first to see what happens.

Hi Kathleen,

I installed UPHClean. I will keep an eye on event viewer to see if that
gets rid of error 1517.

I went into wmimgmt console. I see in the Security section that there is a
root namespace and thirteen subnamespaces, and that I can assign permissions
for all of these. Currently, local administrators have all possible
permissions except "Special Permissions". The Local System, Network System,
and Everyone accounts have "Execute Methods", "Provider Write", "Enable
Account" but do not have "Full Write", "Partial Write", "Remote Enable",
"Read Security", "Edit Security", or "Special Permissions". I am not sure
how to tell if these are correct. I did a google search on error 5603 and
from what I found, it doesn't seem to be too serious. So far, I have not
changed anything in wmimgmt console.

Next, I followed your advice to delete the profile, restart the computer,
and recreate the profile. I will keep an eye on it for a few days to see if
the problem went away. I will report what I find.

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Paul
