Outlook 2002 Messenger 6 interoperability

I have Outlook 2002 and MSN Instant Messenger 6.0
installed.
Outlook behaves as if there is no MSN Messenger present.
I have found support articles referring to Messenger 5,
containing a work around using previous versions. I have
found no information relating to Messenger 6 and Outlook
2002.

When either ticking the box or clicking the options button
( in Outlook 2002 - "Tools" menu - "Options" window -
"Other" tab - "Instant Messaging" section )
The message about requiring Messenger 3.5 or later is
displayed.

Is there still no compatibility between Outlook 2002 and
Messenger with version 6 of messenger installed?
