Outlook 2002 not responding

Outlook 2002 stops responding when I get a new e-mail. Here's the background:
My current pst file is about 420megs. I decided to create another one,
brand new, to keep the file from becoming unmanagable, and just keep it as an
archive. I have many folders in my pst file, so I copied it to another file
name, created a new data file entry that pointed to it, re-started Outlook,
deleted all the files within it, and compacted it, so I had a new, clean pst
file with the sub-folder structure from the first. I changed the mail
delivery setting, and re-started Outlook again.
When I get a new message notification (pop-up and sound), that's when
Outlook halts. If I choose Yes or No on the window that asks whether I would
like to read the new mail that has arrived, the application freezes. If I
ignore that window, and act quickly, I can get to the menu functions and mail
in the main Outlook window.
I suspected there might be an issue with the new pst file, so I created a
new one via the New/Outlook Data File... menu, changed the mail delivery
options, etc., and came up with the same freezing difficulty.
I ran Scanpst.exe on all the files, and there were no errors.
If I go back to the original pst file, everything works perfectly, so that's
what I am doing for now.
What do you think I should try to resolve this issues?

Thanks.

You could also try creating a new mail profile from scratch and see if that
helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I created a new profile, a new data file, and
started adding e-mail accounts one-by-one. All seemed to work OK until the
6th POP e-mail account (there are 13 accounts total, all POP3) when a new
message indicator would lock Outlook up. I removed a few, and added them in
different order, but it seems that 5 was all that Outlook would support.

I've gone back to my original profile and data file, and all accounts are
working. I will have to add a data file at some point, and would like to
figure out what is preventing me from doing it now, so the issue doesn't
become critical when the file is really too large to manage.

I rechecked the system for viruses and spyware, and came up relatively clean.

What other options could I try?

Thanks.

This may be a stupid question but what method are you using to add the e-mail
accounts to your profile?

Not a stupid question at all. I use Tools/E-mail Accounts.../Add a new
e-mail account/POP3/and fill in all the pertinent information. I click on
the Test Account Settings ... button, verify that the settings work, Click
Next, then Finish.

Am I missing something?

Thanks, again, for your help.

OK, another question: What is the time interval you have set on each account
to check for new messages? If they're too close together, you may run into
problems. At least 10 minutes between polls for new mail is recommended.

I have traditionally used a 5 minute interval, but, if you think that will
help me get this issue resolved, I can reset it to 10 minutes. Would that
affect what happens after a New Mail notification?

Thanks.

I don't really think it's the new message indicator causing the problem; I
just think it's a symptom. Try the longer interval and if the problem
doesn't go away, we'll examine that separately. Good luck!

I increased the interval to 10 minutes for the Send/Receive Group. The first
time I received mail, and responded to the New Mail indicator, Outlook
stopped responding and had to be shut down. I tried it again and did not
respond to the New Mail indicator, just tried to read the new message, and
Outlook stopped responding also.

What would you suggest I try next? Do you think there might be a corrupted
file that is sabotaging the creation of the new data file?

Thanks.

I'm trying to get some assistance on this one...I'll post back when I get
some answers for you (hopefully).
