Outlook 2002 POP account stopped deleting downloaded messages

I use Outlook 2002 in POP configuration to download my Yahoo email. I was out
of town for 2 weeks, got back, and downloaded over 1,000 messages--mostly
spam. But it is not deleting downloaded messages, so every time I now
send/receive, it downloads the whole 1,000 again (now 1,100). How do I get it
to delete downloaded messages?

I tried going straight to the Yahoo account through my browser and deleting
the spam there, but got a message "Some of the selected messages have not
loaded yet. Please scroll through the list to ensure they load, then try
again."

However, not being able to delete your email via the Yahoo web interface
would indicate a mailbox issue. Contact Yahoo support.
