Outlook 2002 sound problem

I am trying to get Outlook to play a cool .wav file I downloaded for when I
receive new mail.

I went to the sounds section under the control panel and I set the "new
mail" notification to play the .wav file, but when I get new mail, it still
just beeps at me.

Can anyone help?

Double check the list of events. In my list there were multiple New Mail
type events. Assign the sound to all of them as a test.

I do not have multiple New Mail events.

It's a long shot but make sure the sound option is checked here: Tools menu

The sound option is checked under Tool>Options>E-Mail Options>Advanced
E-Mail Options>Play a Sound.

Under the Control Panel>Sounds Speech and Audio Devices>Sounds and Audio
Devices>Sounds>New Mail Notification, I have my cool .wav file. I tested it
there and it plays fine.

I still get this annoying beep when new mail arrives!!!

I tried to set the rule, but it forced me to receive a message each time a
new message arrived.

I'm not sure what you mean by "forced me to receive a message each time a
new message arrived". Do you mean that a dialog showed up for each message?
What sort of rule did you setup?

Yeah, a message showed up on the screen each time new mail arrived. I
couldn't find a way to eliminate that part of the rule. It made me say
whether the message was of high, medium, or low importance too.

I give up.

OK, you can create a simple rule with no criteria (simply click through that
part of the creation and confirm you want it that way) and only choose the
sound action and no other action.
