Outlook 2002 Very Slow to Open

Outlook 2002 on a WinXP system is very slow to open --
takes 15 to 20 seconds. There are two Microsoft Knowledge
Base articles that deal with this, but neither seems to
apply in this case. One article says that the problem is
caused by the Office Add-in which is part of Norton
Antivirus. However, after disabling the Add-in, the slow
opening problem persists. The other article says that
Office XP applications may be slow to open if Windows
Messenger is not running. However, in my case Windows
Messenger is running. I have seen the problem on another
machine. I can't find any more information on this
problem on the Microsoft Web Site. Any ideas would be
appreciated.

Is the Messenger Integration disabled? You might want to give this a try
anyway.

I presume you are referring to Messenger Service rather
than Windows Messenger. In any event, I enabled both, but
Outlook 2002 is still just as slow to open. Thanks for
the suggestion. Any other ideas?

Nope, not the Messenger service. But the Windows Messenger integration which
can be found in Tools-> Options-> tab Other. Disable it and restart Outlook
to see if it makes any difference.

Both should be DISABLED.

Thanks. I've got it straight now on what to disable.
Unfortunately, disabling the Windows Messenger
integration from Outlook 2002 options did not improve the
speed to open. Splash screen appears within seconds, and
then it takes 28-30 seconds to open to the Outlook 2002
Inbox. This is puzzling, because I did not have this
problem with Outlook 2000.

Do you have a Hotmail account in your profile? If so, for some reason,
Outlook checks that account for mail before allowing you to check for
any other mail.

Not true;
-Windows Messenger integration should be disabled when you do not connect to
the .NET service by MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger
-Messenger service should be disabled when you do not use it either. Proper
firewall configuration will hold the "spam net sends" out of your network
configuration. The last part isn't specific to the Messenger service but
needs to be done for all the program/port configurations you do not use.
