Outlook 2002 will not start even in safe mode

Dell Dimension 8400 Pentium 4 3 Gig HZ,
76.1 Gig HD (18.8 Gig Free Space); 1.5 Gig RAM
XP Pro Ver 2002 SP2
Office 2002 for Students and Teachers will current updates.

My outlook stopped functioning. It attempted to open and then showed the
message that “it was closed improperly and that the Personal Folder was being
checked†(a checking process with progress bar stared and completed) then the
archive file was checked. It then opened briefly and then closed.
Repeated attempts were the same. Many re-boots didn’t help and then I also
tried starting in Safe Mode. Also, did not help. I ran the MS Office fix and
repair, on Excel, because I couldn’t open Outlook to run it on it, hoping it
would correct any office file error. It completed successfully, however, w/o
fixing the problem.

Your advice would very much appreciated.

Try setting up a new profile in Control Panel, Mail. You could run the Inbox
Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) From help: ...you can use the Inbox Repair tool
(Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. The Inbox Repair
tool scans only the .pst or .ost file, making sure that the file structure is
intact. It doesn't scan your mailbox on the Microsoft Exchange Server. The
Inbox Repair tool will reset your file structure and rebuild headers.

Mary:

Now that I have used Start=>Control Panal=>Mail to clear the old Profile,
Outlook now opens and stays open - partial success.

How do I redirect it to my old PST file (outlook.pst). I have tried using
Outlook's Tools=>Email Accounts but I can't seem to make it let loose of the
empty default file and grab the old one.

Please advise.

Still in the Mail applet in Control Panel, click the Data Files button and
add your old PST. Then go back to the E-mail Accounts button, choose "View
or change existing e-mail accounts" and change the "Deliver new e-mail to
the following location" drop-down to point to our old PST that you just
added. Now, go back to Data Files and remove the new, empty PST.

RIght-click your Contacts folder, choose Properties, select the Outlook
Address Book tab and make sure the checkbox labeled "Show this folder as an
e-mail Address Book" is checked. If you can check it, you should be done.
If you can't check it, close the dialogue and exit Outlook.

With the Mail applet in Control Panel, click E-mail Accounts, select the
"View or change existing directories or address books" and click Next. If
the "Outlook Address Book" service exists, select it and click Remove, then
Finish. If it's not there, just click FInish. Now click E-mail Accounts
again and select the "Add a new directory or address book" radio button and
click Next. Select Additional Address Books and click Next. Select Outlook
Address book, click Next, select the sort order you want, and click Finish.
Close the Mail applet and start Outlook. RIght-click the COntacts folder,
choose Properties, select the Outlook Address Book tab, and make sure the
check box I mentioned in the first paragraph is checked.
