I recently downloaded the Office SP3 update. This happened around the same
time that my email provider changed to SSL required connection. Thereafter,
I get the prompt to enter my email password everytime I restart Outlook.
(Note: I am running Windows XP, not Vista - I couldn't find anyone else
with this problem that had not recently upgraded to Vista. Outlook info is
Outlook 2002 version 10.6838.6839 SP3)
At first, I got TWO prompts everytime I started Outlook - one for email
provider's *OLD* incoming (POP3) server and one for the *NEW* incoming (POP3)
server. I only had one email account set up, with the new settings, but
somehow it kept asking for the password for the old server as well.
I would also get a prompt everytime I tried to send a message - this was for
the *NEW* outgoing (SMTP) server (it never asked for the old one for the
outgoing server).
A few weeks ago, I found a similar post and followed the directions given
for this problem (it was a knowledge base document, but I don't remember the
#):
- I started Outlook in safe mode and eliminated all Com Add-Ins. This made
no difference whatsoever.
- I modified the registry by removing user account information from the
"Protected Storage System Provider" subkeys and re-entered my password
options. The first time, this made no difference whatsoever.
- I deleted the email account altogether and did the above two steps again.
After going through the registry change and *adding* a new email account, I
am now prompted only for the *NEW* server password. The *OLD* server
password prompt has disappeared. While this is an improvement, I'd like to
know if there is any hope of eliminating this nuisance altogether.
