Outlook (2002)

I am about ready to give up on Outlook. The messages I'm getting (very
frequently now) read "The operation timed out waiting for a response from the
SMTP server" I called Earthlink to verify that my settings were correct. A
few needed to be changed (like the SMTP address and the SMTP number) but I'm
still getting a lot of interruptions. I checked my e-mail on Earthlink's web
mail service and it's going through so I know that Earthlink isn't the
problem. What can I do? I can't tell which e-mail messages are getting
through and I have a business to run and depend on e-mail every day. Thanks
for any advice you can give me. Do I need to buy the newer Outlook? If so,
can I buy it separate from the whole Office package (which I don't need).

This is actually an addendum to my post below. The error message I am getting
now is 550. I can receive e-mail but can't send.

Are you using a virusscanner that integrates with Outlook? Then that is most
likely the cause of your timeouts. See the documentation of your
virusscanner on how to properly disable the e-mail scanning as it won't add
an extra level of security anyway.
