Outlook 2002

There are a lot of messages on here where people cannot send e-mail from
outlook, and it does not seem to be just one version. I just read one from a
guy who has 2003. I have 98, and I have 2002, and I can't send from either
of them.
My ISP says it is Microsoft's problem. Outlook comes back and says it is my
ISP's problem. My ISP supports Outlook Express but not outlook. Seems to me
that Microsoft needs to support (without charge) their product when so many
people are having the exact, same problem. Does anyone have any ideas about
how to configure 2002 to send mail?

Microsoft does offer no-charge support incidents for retail Outlook users
through their web site at http://support.microsoft.com

Configuration issues are specific to each ISP. If you can get Outlook
Express set up correctly, you should be able to import those settings into
Outlook 2002 (don't remember about OL98).

Most problems with *sending* mail these days are due to restrictions at the
outgoing server. To combat SPAM, most of the larger public ISPs have
instituted some sort of authentication. The most common methods are requiring
the sender to be connected directly to their network, signing in to the SMTP
server (on the Outgoing Server tab) or retrieving mail from a mailbox on the
server just before sending. Sometimes logging on to the outgoing server
requires the full email address (not just the ID).
