Outlook 2003 100% CPU with word as email editor

OS: XP SP1
Office 2003

I have a couple of users with this issue.

If using Word as email editor in Outlook 2003, when opening or forwarding a
message word will consume 100 CPU and hang the system.
(These are fast systems with plenty of RAM and disk space.) Same basic
symptoms as MS KB article 241425 but without disk thrashing.

Any ideas?

The following has had no effect on the issue.
1. turning off anti-virus software.
