Outlook 2003 & 2007 POP3 recieve with multiple accounts very slow

Hi,

Forgive me if this is something easy to answer, but everything I find
pertains to people asking about this from years ago with no real
answers so I thought I'd post again.

I have verified with both Outlook 2003 SP2 and Outlook 2007 that when
downloading from multiple e-mail accounts (multiple POP3 accounts)
simultaeneously the speed drops to a crawl.

Here is a snippet of the OPMLog.log file where I have specifically
just started the download from one account:

As you can see these smallmessages come down at a rate of several per
second.

After doing a global send/recieve (ie activating the other 5 POP3
accounts) this is what happens to original still continuing e-mail
download:

As you can see this changes it from several/second to about 1 ever
second. The net change for this particular mailbox with 900 messages
and 85MB of total e-mail goes from about an 18 minute download to
about 1.5 hours.

I have verified using thunderbird that doing the same thing there does
not slow the dowload at all.

Any help would be appreciated, keeping in mind this is not an outlook
2007 only problem, but also 2003. I have looked around for any
settings to change, but nothing seems to make a difference. Also it
doesn't matter if the added simultaneously checked accounts are on the
same server or a different server - any secondary POP3 checking will
drag the original to a crawl.

Looking at the release notes for Outlook 2003 SP1, it notes that SP1
for 2003 was supposed to fix a problem like this - but either it came
back after SP2 or it never really fixed it.

Just as a small update, this issue came up because we switched mail
servers from an older Imail install (which wasn't great and seriously
needed updating) to Scalix, which is pretty good so far. The reason we
didn't have this issue is that Imail apparently didn't let users
download more than one POP access simultaneously (user defined as a
connection from a particular machine). The new server does. Obviously
I'm going to work on seeing if I can't get Scalix to do the same thing
- but that's the wrong end of fixing it in my opinion. Obviously it's
Outlooks mail connection bit that is broken - there's no reason why
simultaneous POP account accesses should impact on performance so
severely unless the underlying multi-threaded code has a severe
problem. And in case it isn't clear, even just checking another empty
POP account, not even downloading any other mail still makes the
initial POP connection go into "slow" mode for the rest of the
download. Only killing all tasks and restarting fixes it.

If I had to guess, the imail server behaved that way due to this issue
in the original Outlook 2003 client, it was probably a quick way to
fix many user complaints:) FYI the SMTP traffic that iMail throws at
me for this is: "+OK maildrop locked and ready" I'm not enough of an
SMTP guru to know exactly what that pertains to (I'll have to check
RFC's I guess) but if anyone is familiar with it and could point the
way as to how to implement that same behaviour that would be cool -
I'll post to my Scalix forums too.

Forgive me if this is something easy to answer, but everything I find
pertains to people asking about this from years ago with no real
answers so I thought I'd post again.

I have verified with both Outlook 2003 SP2 and Outlook 2007 that when
downloading from multiple e-mail accounts (multiple POP3 accounts)
simultaeneously the speed drops to a crawl.

As you can see these smallmessages come down at a rate of several per
second.

As you can see this changes it from several/second to about 1 ever
second. The net change for this particular mailbox with 900 messages
and 85MB of total e-mail goes from about an 18 minute download to
about 1.5 hours.

I have verified using thunderbird that doing the same thing there does
not slow the dowload at all.

Any help would be appreciated, keeping in mind this is not an outlook
2007 only problem, but also 2003. I have looked around for any
settings to change, but nothing seems to make a difference. Also it
doesn't matter if the added simultaneously checked accounts are on the
same server or a different server - any secondary POP3 checking will
drag the original to a crawl.

Looking at the release notes for Outlook 2003 SP1, it notes that SP1
for 2003 was supposed to fix a problem like this - but either it came
back after SP2 or it never really fixed it.

The same behavior happens even if I just check 2 at a time.

I have exactly the same problem with my Outlook 2003 SP3.
No matter what I do, downloading from several accounts takes WAY too long.
This is not the same with OE, but there are certain features that I prefer in
Outlook (primarily rules and junk mail filtering). Any help would be GREATLY
appreciated.
As downloading 4MB of email (about 100 msgs) for several minutes over a
10mbit connection kind of gets on my nerves...

will check on a server at a time, to prevent "DOS" attacks.
