Outlook 2003 Address Book problem - different email address forms

If I go to send an email, and type the first letter of the person's name, I'm
shown automatically a list of people in my Contacts folder and I can click on
that name and it is put into the email.

So if I type R a list of R names comes up, and I can click on the one I want
and it is inserted into my email -

(e-mail address removed)

HOWEVER if I click on the To Button, then the Select Names box comes up, and
if I select the EXACT SAME NAME - it gets inserted with a DIFFERENT FORMAT OF
THE EMAIL ADDRESS -

Robert Johnson ([email protected] SMTP (e-mail address removed))

Then this email with the SMTP in the address always gets bounced back to me
as a bad email address.

Can someone tell me how to fix this problem ?
Thanks

Does this happen with every contact?

If not, then it looks like there is something wrong in the contacts. Find
this person in your contact list and make sure the address is correct in the
properties. If so I will try deleting it and adding it back again?

Yes it happens with every contact - every name in the popup address book is
listed with the SMTP address - which gets bounced back every time.

No, you're not. You're show a list of addresses to which you've sent mail
previously. That list is not connected to your Contacts in any way
whatsoever.

That's because, while in the first case you're referencing your
autocompletion cache, in the second case, you're referencing the Address
Book view of your Contacts folder.

Because you have an error in the Contacts item for this person.
