Outlook 2003 adds squares to email replies

Outlook 2003 being used as an email client for AOL's IMAP email service.
On some of the email replies sent from this client, squares are added to the
reply email when opened by the recipient (not seen before the email is sent).
Rest of Office is XP, so not using Word as email editor.
Same issue happens when using either HTML, Rich Text or Plain Text as the
email editor.
Encoding Options set as per below:
- Auto select encoding for outgoing messages is ticked
- Western European (ISO) is set for preffered encoding for outgoing messages

Example of an email with the squares:
From: Nigel [mailto:[email protected]]
Sent: 24 August 2005 19:05
To: 'James'
Subject: RE: YOUR EMAIL TO ME WITH 'SQUARES' >>>>>>>>FW: N >>> Jennifer :
Note Book : 22 AUG



Again a reply using Rich text - there are a lot of Squares in this one. . .
are they still there ???

Thank you for quick response.

No - not contacted AOL yet - wanted to ensure it wasnt an Outlook setup
issue. Have scoured many newsgroups - both Outlook & AOL - but cannot find
anyone else who has experienced the same problem
