Outlook 2003 and MSN Messenger

I have not been able to get Outlook 2003 to work with MSN Messenger 6.1 (i.e. show status, send IM's, etc.)--it only works with Windows Messenger. I've read through many of the discussions posted here, and I'm totally confused. Maybe someone can answer this for me: Does Outlook 2003 support MSN Messenger 6.1 or does it not? Seems some discussion threads imply YES while others imply (or state) NO. I've been tinkering with these programs for quite a while and I'm concerned that I'm banging my head against the wall if in fact they will NEVER work together. Thanks for the help.
