Outlook 2003 Appears to Freeze

Roger

Here is the setup then I will explain the problems we are
having with Office 2003.

We are using Office 2003 (with all updates installed) on
Windows XP Pro desktops (with all updates installed),
email server is Exchange 5.5 (update for Outlook 2003 has
been applied to exchange server), all servers are running
Windows NT 4 Service Pack 6.

The documents we are having problems with are stored on a
file server, if the document is local on the system you
do not have a problem. The documents were created using
Office 97.

The problems are as follows:

When you open a Word document
Click File - Send as Attachment
Outlook 2003 opens up
When you enter the TO: name and click send
It sits there and appears not to be responding.
While Outlook is sitting there the e-mail recepient
receives the message
Even though it apprears Outlook 2003 is still not
responding, so you think the email wasn't sent.
After a while you can close the Outlook screen and
continue working.
If you open e-mail and insert the file from e-mail it
works fine.

The next problem in Word is it keeps giving the message
that someone currently has the document open, which isn't
the case. If you go in and manually delete the temp file
it has created from where they were in it earlier then
you can open it.

Word also seems to lock up often.

I have checked the Microsoft site and other places on the
web but I haven't been able to find a solution for these
problems. Any help is greatly appricated.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Roger:

On the Outlook issue, I can confirm similar issues with OL 2003, when it is
called by another app (in your case Word) or when using automation. What
appears to be happending is that the individual mail item window "ghosts"
after the Send button is clicked mostly leaving just the mail item's window
frame which remains displayed, even though Outlook has in fact sent the mail
item as expected. The problem appears in most cases on our systems when
the Office spell checker has run on the mail item and prompted for a
correction.

All that the user needs to do is to click the Windows close button (the "X")
on the "ghosted" mail item and continue working; frustrating yes, lost data
or mail? Haven't seen that occur even when this problem manifest itself.
Also haven't found a solution yet for the issue.
