Outlook 2003 appointment compatibility issues

When inviting attendee's using outlook 2003 and the
attendee is using Outlook 2000, the attendee's (Outlook
2002) sees an email text message that might be some kind
of HTML file.

Is there a switch to set for compatibility with previous
Outlook versions? How about a update to Outlook at
either end to fix this problem?

They already have. There's an iCal hotfix for Outlook 2000 post SP2. See
