Outlook 2003 Attachment Blocking Security

Dave Levine

Hello,

I'd like to unblock .prf extensions from outlook and allow these items to be
opened not saved to disk on client machines. I know I can allow these items
to be saved by adding registry key Level1Remove. However, this does not
allow me to open the items through Outlook...

Please can someone help me.

To do that, you'd need to implement the Outlook Security Settings folder on
your Exchange server. This will allow you to demote .prf files from Level 1
to Level 2 *and* down from Level 2.

What baffles me is why you would want users to be able to run .prf files
willy-nilly in the first place. They're quite powerful and should be invoked
only for specific purposes.

Hello,

Thanks for the info... I was trying to work through this, this morning...
I'll get back to it and see if I can get it to work...

My reasoning behind opening these attachments that way is that I have users
who don't know how to save or manipulate files and folders in any way... I
was trying to make the process of opening these attachments easy for them...

I understand the security issues here, but I have in place a number of
filters on a gateway and on Exchange, and I feel it is best to ease their
process as we have a decent security policy in place.

You really need to teach your users basic file management.
