Outlook 2003 blocking attachments?

I am using Outlook 2003 & when I receive an mail
message with an attachment (Excel, Word, .pdf etc) I
can not open the attachment by double clicking it within
the opened mail message. I receive a message along the
lines that "Word (or Excel etc.) can not open the
attachment - user does not have access privileges".

I can however open the attachment by double clicking
via the reading pane (when this function is switched
on) . I have never had this problem before could be
attributed to the fact that I have just done a complete
re-install of the OS (Win XP Pro) & all my applications &
that I have not set something up properly? Happy to hear
suggestions. Thanks.
