I have a mobile users one a brand new Dell laptop running Windows XP
Pro XP2, with Office 2003 SP2 connecting to Exchange 2000.
I configured Offline Files so that he will be able to work while not on
the network, and not VPN connected. I also attempted to configure
Cached Exchange Mode so that he can at least read previous mail message
while offline. The user is in the local Power Users group.
While configuring the Outlook profile I noticed something strange. I
typed in the server name, checked the Cached Exchange Mode box, and
typed in the user name. Then when I click the check name button, it
verifies and underlines the username, but also UNCHECKS the Cached
Exchange Mode box.
If I just recheck it and finish the setup, Outlook isn't in cached
mode. I have to manually go into the email account options and
configure the cached exchange from the "more settings" advanced tab.
When I click apply, it tells me that it cannont create the file
%userprofile%\outlook.pst. If I click ok, and close outlook, then
reopen it, viola it can't open default folders. DUH! So I remove the
cached modes, and it works fine. Then I manually configure the Cached
Exchange again, but this time manually set the offline file location,
and put it in a folder on the local drive. Now Outlook start synching
correctly.
The only problem now is, that it won't sync all messages, it stops with
messages in June. I see errors in the "sync issues" folder that
Outlook creates which I will post next time I'm working on the laptop.
There is a link in the error that takes you to some unhelpful Microsoft
KB articles. This user has over 8000 items in his inbox, but his
mailbox on the server is less than 800MB. I know that .ost files have
a limit of 2GB.
I tried putting the .ost in several locations, and noticed that each
time it recreated it, the file size was usually within 10MB of 340,
possibly a coincidence. Is it possible that there is some limit to the
number of messages that are allowed to sync? His inbox stopped at 1788
messages, but then after quites some time (and him using his Outlook
client on his desktop) it went to 1790. I deleted several messages
down to 1787 and it sat at that ammount for 30 minutes or so, then went
back up to 1788. The bottom right corner of Outlook says that it is up
to date, but when I look at the sync information for each mail folder,
it shows that the server has 8000+ messages and the offline folder only
has 1788.
This is making me CRAZY! The worse part is (or possible best part,
depending on how you look at it), I just set up another new laptop for
our new President with basically the same setup, and it work perfect!!!
Help! please?
