outlook 2003 calendar button doesnt display calendar

I installed Office 2003 on my win2003 server OS. My problem is that my
Calendar navagation button on the bottom left hand corner does not bring up
the calendar in the right display pane. Which ever folder I was in stays
there and any properties I try to manage affects that mail folder.
The left hand navagaion screen above the buttons goes to Calendar, but no
months are listed, just "open a shard Calendar"
I can left click on the Calendar button to open it up in another window.
how do I fix the button to display my calendar without having to open
another window?
