Outlook 2003 - Can receive email but CANNOT SEND

R

Ron

I have recently set up Outlook 2003 on my home computer to send / receive
from a yahoo web email account. Everything tests successfully except sending
email. I can receive and download email from the server but cannot send? The
error says something about ports but I am using defaults and it should be
fine. My home network is using a netgear wireless router. A friend suggested
it might be packet size but netgear website says that the router default is
1500 which is the largest ethernet packet size(so they say). I dont know much
about networking so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sometimes the MTU must be lower than that, but the most likely cause is that
you're not properly authenticating to the outgoing server. You also want to
disable any mail scanning feature of your antivirus program.

Thanks for teh response Brian but it still isnt working

I disabled email scanning on my antivirus software and also looked at the
authentication to the outgoing server. Shouldnt it be the same as incoming? I
tried various settings and still nothing is helping. I am still receiving an
error stating that outlook cant find the outgoing server?

Soe antivirus programs require uninstalling and reinstalling without the
mail scanning feature in order to truly disable it.

Depends on the ISP, but in general, selecting the "Use same settings as my
incoming server" is the correct option to choose.

Can you ping the outgoing server from a command line prompt? Can you telnet
to the outgoing server's SMTP port?

Again thanks for the support. I tried using "Use same settings as my
incoming server" and it did not help. I can ping the outgoing server
no problem. I attempted to connect with telnet on port 25 which is
the default? and it did not work? What does that mean?

If you can't telnet to port 25 of the server, then Outlook won't be able to
send mail via that port, either. Are you sure that port 25 is the one you
should use?

I have no idea what port to use? The default is 25 so I figured that would be
fine. How do I determine what port to use? If I can ping it what port am I
pinging on? What is the recommended port and packet size for a wireless
network with netgear router? I know a number of people having the same
issue......
