Outlook 2003 cannot open Digitally Signed E-mails

Hi folks,

The doubt is very simple, but I could find any answer for it.
I have a few users that cannot open digitally signed e-mails. Outlook simply
displays an error message, that does not give me any clue.
I already tried to uninstall SP3 from Office 2003 and many other updates,
but no success.
I installed a new computer from scratch and applied all patches, and it
opens the e-mails. I was trying to find if something changed in the
computers, but still no sucess.
I open the emails from Outlook 2007 and it works perfectly. Unfortunately I
cannot upgrade theses computers.

Any ideas?

Thank you very much!

And what was that error?

Tried doing a repair on Office on those machines already?

Are the senders using Outlook as well? If so ask them to click
Tools>Options>Security and check the setting is the checkbox labeled "Send
clear text signed message when sending signed message". Is it checked or
not? What happens if they toggle it?

Sorry about the dealy,

The error is:
Cannot Open This Item. A required action was not successful because of an
unspecified error

The problem is that some users with Outlook 2003 can open them.

Hi Brian,

Yes, the senders use Outlook as well. When they select this option, the
problem still occurs. I noticed that is a default parameter.

I removed a lot of patches just to test, but still no success.

Any ideas?

Tks

So, let me reiterate: the messages are sent and received by Outlook, they
are signed, not encrypted, and Outlook cannot open them, responding with the
error you posted before. Is this all correct? What type of account are you
using? Do you have the Reading Pane enabled? Does the message occur
immediately when you select the message or only when you try to open it?
Can you right-click its Inbox entry and view headers with the Options item?
Do you scan incoming messages with an antivirus or -spam filter integrated
into Outlook? If you start Outlook in safe mode does it make a difference?
