Outlook 2003 can't send email on Comcast

For the past three years, I have used Outlook 2003 as my email client.
I have one copy on my home machine and one copy on my portable. The
home machine works great and can send and receive on Comcast high speed
cable. But when I use my portable when traveling, Outlook 2003 is not
able to send email; it can receive but not send. I have seen tens of
threads reporting the same problem over the years but no one has ever
posted the definitive solution or even explanation.

I've followed the Comcast FAQ's to the letter, tried numerous
variations such as changing ports (587 is one a Comcast FAQ suggested)
and other variations suggested in posts on various boards. Still no
solution. The same two error messages always come back:

"...The server was found but no response..."

"..Outlook could not connect to the outgoing mail server..."

I currently use Comcast webmail when on the road, but I sure would like
to be able to us Outlook when traveling. Any ideas?

Perhaps if you state what you DO use for their settings, someone can help
you out. I, for one, use Comcast without error and have since 2000.

You might want to add an additional email account such as gmail. Gmail is
free and can be used with Outlook. You would be able to use Gmail's SMTP
server at any location. Don't think you would be abandoning your ISP and the
email address you have from them if, in setting up the new account, you give
your original email address as the reply address. All emails sent to you
would then come to you through your ISP's server. I've been using this
arrangement for years and find it works very well.

I had the same problem earlier in the year, could not send my comcast email
through outlook from my laptop while traveling, and found the following,
while it is stated for OE, the same settings work for Outlook as well. Since
making these changes in my Outlook settings on my laptop, I have been able
to send my comcast email using Outlook while traveling with no problem.
Basically, have to specify port setttings for it to use.
