Outlook 2003 - Continually setting up a local copy

My Outlook has been running fine for the past 9 months...but starting 5
business days ago ...each day when I start Outlook up it tells me "Outlook is
setting up a local copy of my mailbox". This seems to be resulting in an
additional outlook.pst being created each day. I now have outlook, outlook0,
outlook1, 2 and 3. The other annoying thing is it takes awhile for it to be
created and I also lose my "signature" settings for reply and forward which I
have had to re-set each day.

Any suggestions how to resolve?

Just to add some more information.

It is happening again today and the very first Outlook message I get when it
is started is "Preparing Outlook for first use".
