Outlook 2003: Copy of E-Mails sent sits in the Outbox

In Outlook 2003, I have e-mails sitting in the Outbox. We have checked and
the e-mails have been SUCCESSFULLY SENT. However, none of the sent e-mails
are in the sent items,. They remain in the outbox. How do I turn off or stop
this from happening. Thank you.
