Outlook 2003 Corrupt views for user with 'shared mailbox'...

A

Alex Hawkins

Hi guys,

this is my first post, and I've trawled the groups and not managed to
find the same problem as this, so here I go.

I have a user who has access to several shared mailboxes in Outlook
2003. Her colleagues also have access to these shared mailboxes. When
she customizes her views and leaves/changes focus from the folder in
question, then returns, her views have changed back to default. For
example, if she add's the 'To' field into the columns, and then moves
to another folder or mailbox, and then clicks back to this original
folder, her views revert back to default.

Her colleagues do NOT have this happen, and we have proved that she is
adding customizations correctly, the same as her colleagues do.

Corrupt profile you might think?? Well, we gave a new mail profile for
this users account, and nothing changed. Same problem.

I have borrowed the account logon details for her account, and two of
the shared accounts.

Logging onto her work account and opening her email gives the same
problem, which I expected...

I then logged onto the shared account, just incase they were somehow
resetting the views (I didn't expect this as the other colleagues were
not affected, but you have to eliminate everything) - the shared
accounts did not suffer from this same problem.

I then gave myself full mailbox access to her mail account, and set it
up in my work account, leaving her work account out of the equation.
So, having logged into my work account, and then setting up a mail
profile in my account to access her mailbox, opening Outlook and
adding the necessary shared account mailboxes in, I managed to re-
create the problem. This is somehow related to her mail account. This
is proved by the fact that I left her work account out of the
equation, and accessed her mailbox from my account.

Somehow, her account is interacting with the shared accounts to create
this problem. I have also given a new Windows profile for her work
account to check it wasn't messing things up, and that made again, no
difference.

Couple of questions, other than the one above ;-)

1. does the cleanviews/ switch effectively have the same effect as
giving new profile, i.e is it stored in the mail profile itself, or
somewhere in the mailbox on Exchange?

2. when a user changes view settings in a shared mailbox from their
own Outlook front end, do the settings in ANY way get stored in the
shared accounts profile?

This is such an odd problem, only one person affected, all other users
with access to the same mailboxes cannot replicate the issue... a new
mail profile and windows profile haven't helped... the only thing that
is left are the mail profiles on the shared accounts, but then again,
the other users aren't getting these problems, and the issues is over
a few shared accounts, so the chances that the separate shared mailbox
accounts have all started having the same problem together, is not
logical and almost impossible, unless something from her mail profile
(which has been changed) or her mailbox on Exchange is interacting in
a strange way with each of the affected shared accounts...

Thanks for getting this far guys,

Any help will be very appreciated... any questions, please ask

Cheers,

Alex

Views are for the user. You can reset the view on a folder by View-> Arrange
By-> Custom-> Reset Current View
To do this for all folders that share the same view (by default this view is
called Messages) go to;
View-> Arrange By-> Current View-> Define Views-> select Messages-> Reset

1) /cleanviews and a mail profile are 2 completely different things. Views
are stored within a messages store (like a mailbox) and a mail profile
contains account configuration information.

2) That would depend on how the view was changed but in general it is kept
in the shared mailbox for that user.

It's not odd, you're troubleshooting and resetting the wrong thing ;-)
